in this series "coast to coast" i think about the coastal regions i hold dear to my heart. they all share the same properties : water, sand, sun : but i love how different they feel from each other. i hope they give you a sense of nostalgia for places by the water.
when i was a teenager i was lucky enough to accompany my grandparents to the hawaiian islands more than once. all of the islands felt special to me, especially moloka'i and maui. i felt a connection to my pacific islander ancestry. you see my great grandfather was born on moloka'i and my great great grandmother was born on maui. the warming crystal blue waters that wash up onto the jet black sand was magic. i still have some of that sand in a little jar. i yearn to go back to show my own littles a piece of their history. hopefully one day soon.
